How to make origami boxes

There are various size of origami boxes that you can make from a square paper. If you want, you can have a lid for the box you make. The origami box is very simple to make but the good part is you can actually make use of it.

If we define the width and height of a sqaure to be 1 (with no unit), then total area of the original paper to be 1. Then I can also define three variables A_base, A_tot, and V_tot where A_base to be the ratio of base area to the area of an original square paper, A_total ti be the total surface area of the box, and V_tot to be the total volume of the box. These variables will be very useful since we can compare these variables from different boxes.

Before working on these models, you need to know what valley-fold and mountain-fold are and then you should practice these folds with some simple origami models here.

Large Square Origami Box

The large square origami box is easy to fold. The height of this box is exactly half of square width. So it is flatter than a cubic box. A maximum volume for a square box can be made when square width is 2/3 where the volume is 2/27 = 0.074. Since the square width for this box is 1/2 and the volume is 0.0625, it generates a reasonable volume size.
