Gate Fold in Origami
|
Gate fold is very common folding technique in origami. You will be seeing this technique over and over, so you should get familiar with this. |
|
A typical "gate fold" can be represented with either two vertical or two horizontal valley-folds. Two vertical valley-folds are known as "vertical gate-fold" while two horizontal valley-folds for "horizontal gate-fold". If you have both two vertical valley-folds as well as two horizontal valley-folds lines, then you should apply both vertical gate-fold and horizontal gate-fold. The middle two lines are mountain-fold and unfold lines. These two lines are there to help you make outer two valley-fold lines. These middle two lines can be a combination of valley-fold and unfold lines. Since we need this middle line for two outer valley-folds, mountain-fold would be a better choice since it provides a more visible line than a valley-fold. |
|
1. We should apply the middle two folds, that is, a mountain-fold followed by the unfold of a mountain-fold.
When there are two lines, then the order of folding starts from the left or from the top.
So we should apply the mountain-fold first.
Then followed by the unfolding of the mountain-fold. |

2. Prepare to apply two valley-folds vertically for vertical gate-fold.
Prepare to apply two valley-folds horizontally for horizontal gate-fold. |

3. Apply two valley-folds vertically for vertical gate-fold.
The name "gate-fold" comes from the shape representing a gate showing on the left.
Apply two valley-folds horizontally for horizontal gate-fold. |
